Tips for Winter Power Outages

, N.Y. - The Red Cross offers helpful advice from years of experience dealing with calamaties.

When power goes out

  1. Don’t use candles.
  2. Use only a flashlight.
  3. Turn off electrical equipment you were using when power went out.
  4. Do NOT run a generator inside a home or garage.
  5. If you do use a generator, connect items that need power directly to the outlets on the generator. Do not connect a generator to a home’s electrical system.
General cold weather tips

1. Mittens are warmer than gloves.
2. Wear a hat.
3. Hypothermia can be serious. Signs are confusion, dizziness, exhaustion and severe shivering. Get medical attention immediately.
4. Get out of any wet clothes immediately and warm the body core temperature with a blanket or warm fluids.
