A snowstorm is not just a snowstorm. So far this winter has been mild, and almost snowstorm free. In general I'm glad for that, but there is something about a good old-fashioned snowstorm like we are having now. Living in Upstate, NY, I've seen them my whole life. Having one is a sign of normalcy, familiarity. It's the order of things around here. Snowstorms bring memories of childhood - sledding, angles in the snow, snow men, with hot cocoa and cookies after. I've been so preoccupied with the possibility of a looming disease that a snowstorm is a nice reminder of normalcy, and pleasant childhood days. So I look out the window and smile as the fluffy, clean, flakes, floating down. Then wrapped up in my warm flannel nightgown, I eat hot soup in my comfortable lazy-boy chair. Later I will have traditional hot cocoa. All is well. Normal. At lest for today. It's a temporary respite from my worried mind... Of course it dosn't hurt that I don't need to drive in this mess! ;)
Quick, choppy, update on cell instead of using library computer because need food etc before huge storm hits Thus-Sun. TV says maybe worst in 2 yrs! Only 2nd notable storm this season...UPDATE FROM LAST POST-Left message for docs boss (not typical of me), said it's been 3 weeks since odd CBC results, and I won't get interpretation of it for a mo. Ek! Next day my doc called on his day off! He had called a hematologist who will give me a free consultation. Finally! Guess my doc got chewed out by his boss! Now waiting for hematologist to call. Busy studding disease I think I have. I'm tring to prepare emotionally for worst news, and to have some good questions for him. Prayers/good thoughts greatly appreciated!
The "blizzard of 2010" gently brushed Rochester, NY. We got less than an inch of snow today in the city, (6" south of us). A dusting to 2" is expected tomorrow. Yawn! I don't know if I should feel lucky, or jealous? It's very strange to watch the local news, and hear about other cities getting slammed. This winter Washington, DC received more snow than Rochester! So far this is the only eastcoast storm that has reached us. They say that another storm is coming on Monday, but is expected to be mild here. So far it's been a nice winter in Rochester, but winter is far from over. Stay safe folks!
Most winters Rochester, NY gets slammed by snowstorms, but not this year. We only had one storm worth mentioning to date. All of the eastern snow storms have missed us. So today we smugly look upon the rest of the nation and say, "Now you know what we go through every freaken year!" Ah, but don't worry, a storm is brewing here for the middle of next week. A winter storm warning is in effect all day for the Rochester, NY area. Highlights...
-- 4 to 8 inches by 7pm. -- Snow all day Wednesday. -- Heaviest snow 8am to 3pm. -- Total snowfall 8 to 12 inches.
On the news they said that the morning commute will be "manageable". However, we have had a inch or two of snow and roads are slick, so slow down. It's not until later that the brunt of the storm will hit. The good news is that Metro Rochester will not get ice. The souther tier might get a mixture of snow & ice. The power should stay on for the most part. Highs around 30. Winds will be 10 to 15 mph. As Rochester goes, this is a good size storm, but not one of our worst. Seattle's strategy for clearing roads relies on sand and de-icer, not salt, which is a more effective method of melting ice and snow.
"Plowed streets" in Seattle actually means "snow-packed," as in there's snow and ice left on major arterials by design.
"We're trying to create a hard-packed surface," said Alex Wiggins, chief of staff for the Seattle Department of Transportation. "It doesn't look like anything you'd find in Chicago or New York."
The city's approach means crews clear the roads enough for all-wheel and four-wheel-drive vehicles, or those with front-wheel drive cars as long as they are using chains, Wiggins said.
The icy streets are the result of Seattle's refusal to use salt, an effective ice-buster used by the state Department of Transportation and cities accustomed to dealing with heavy winter snows.
"If we were using salt, you'd see patches of bare road because salt is very effective," Wiggins said. "We decided not to utilize salt because it's not a healthy addition to Puget Sound."
By ruling out salt and some of the chemicals routinely used by snowbound cities, Seattle has embraced a less-effective strategy for clearing roads, namely sand sprinkled on top of snowpack along major arterials, and a chemical de-icer that is effective when temperatures are below 32 degrees.
Seattle also equips its plows with rubber-edged blades. That minimizes the damage to roads and manhole covers, but it doesn't scrape off the ice, Wiggins said.
That leaves many drivers, including Seattle police, pretty much on their own until nature does to the snow what the sand can't: melt it.
The city's patrol cars are rear-wheel drive. And even with tire chains, officers are avoiding hills and responding on foot, according to a West Precinct officer."

"Here's the thing about native Northern Californians, there are two breeds. The first being the kind that get snow and the others that don't.
I am from the land of No Snow. It's a nice place filled with grapevines and mild temperature winters. Basically, heaven.
Then I moved to Seattle, Washington.
Now, maybe I am blowing this out of proportion, this Seattle Winter Snow Storm. People in Chicago and other mid-west states are getting it far worse then I am, but this is my blog post and I can whine if I want too. Not to mention on twitter it has it's own hash tag, so it must be important, right? Agree with me people.
So here's the lowdown on the Seattle Snow Storm or for my twitter peeps #seatst, yes it's snowing, in Seattle. So far, by my estimates about a foot overall, however, I am not a meteorologist, so don't quote me. The way that downtown Seattle is laid out, is that, well, there are a lot of hills, like First Hill, Beacon Hill and Capital Hill, and the hills are, well, steep. Imagine, if you will, San Francisco, then add a foot of snow with a nice layer of ice underneath that. You have SNOWMAGEDDON. Yes, I named it Snowmageddon, it's catchy, huh?
Snowmageddon as struck and caused chaos in my city, meaning, people don't know how to drive in the snow/ice. I drive a Jeep Grande Cherokee with 4 wheel drive and believe me 4 wheel drive doesn't work on ice, don't kid yourself. Driving slow and in control does, which is what I have been doing, while also avoiding the crazy idiots who think it's okay to change lanes just as they would if it was overcast outside and also trying to drive 80 miles an hour with chains on, yeah it doesn‘t work. Also, if you see an ambulance sliding down a frozen over hill, I would suggest you and your Dodge Neon not attempt it, just sayin'. There is also the small little fact that the roads aren't very well maintained so driving down the main arterial streets is similar to four wheeling in the backcountry, I'm not exaggerating.
If you can't drive in it you might as well grab your skis and ski down the hill, right? Yeah, I've heard reports of it, haven't seen it yet, but heard about it, I have seen people taking plastic dinner trays and sliding down on them. Also, if you live in the ghetto, a freezer door works well too, interestingly enough.
Seattle was so not prepared for Snowmageddon 08, side streets are stuck in feet of snow, the main streets are filled with divots and almost impassable surfaces, yes, I know only a foot and a half of snow. Silly, right? Not to us, Seattleites, we have not gotten this much snow in many, many years. Some say the last big storm was five years ago, some say it was nothing close to this, who knows, really.
The amazing part of this whole ordeal is the sense of community one feels, we are not alone in this crazy snow. As I drove to work this morning, I see groups of people helping each other dig cars out of snow banks. I see people helping each other walk on icy sidewalks and laughing and throwing snowballs. It's an amazing sight among all the havoc. I guess this is what makes this place so special, to me, anyway."
Rochester NY is going to have it's 1st significant snow storm of the season. "A winter storm warning is effect from 8 AM this morning to 10 PM EST this evening." "Snow will develop later this morning. The snow will become steady late this morning through the afternoon when it could be heavy at times. The heavy snow be accompanied by some thunder. Accumulation 6 to 10 inches. Windy with temperatures steady in the mid to upper 20s. Northeast winds 10 to 20 mph becoming east and increasing to 25 to 35 mph." This storm is considered a moderate one for the area.
The Rochester city school district is closed, which is a big deal here. Many other schools are closed as well. See link below for the latest information.
The good news for Rochester is that it will be all snow and no ice. I hate those mixed precipitation storms that are so hard to clean up. Rochester can handle this, but today will be messy and a good day to stay home. I'm going out soon to do some shopping before the storm hits. I will put one of my snow shovels in my car, and leave it there all season. Then I will stay home safe & sound. It's a good day to make out Christmas cards to send to the relatives. ;o) The next storm is Sunday. It won't be as bad as this one. Click on the link below for the latest weather information.
UPDATE: Generally the Rochester area received 8" to 12" of snow. The official snowfall at the airport was 8.4". The next day many schools remained closed. Digging out was difficult due to the amount of heavy snow, and the cold. The road salt didn't have much effect because of the cold. 2 smaller storms would follow yielding 1'-4" each. As of 12-24-08 snowfall for the season was 43.8" normal average is 23.7. Buffalo had 42.9". Syracuse had the most with 64.3". Click here for snowfall stats.
Yes, Rochester is going to have another snow storm. We are still having winter weather here. We have enjoyed a few days above freezing, but here we go again. The early daylight savings time has thrown me off. It feels like we should have spring weather. The storm won't be bad. Nothing we can't handle. But don't put your snow shovels away yet.

On T.V. they said the higher the elevation the more snow. The higher areas in the Finger lakes could get up to 10 inches of snow. Some power outages, and falling tree limbs are expected there.
ONE FOOT OF SNOW IS COMING TO ROCHESTER. It's 11:30 Thursday night. I have just listened to all 3 local weather reports on the news. This is a brief summery of them...
There is a winter storm watch in effect from Friday afternoon through Sunday morning. Approximately 12 inches of snow is coming to Rochester. We will also have some frozen precipitation in the form of sleet and freezing rain. The snow fall total is difficult to predict because the more frozen precipitation, the less snow we will get. They think about a foot. N.W. Monroe county by the lake should get more snow. This storm is similar to the one we got around Feb. 27. This will be a prolonged event Starting Friday into Sunday. Saturday will be the worst day. Actually there are two snow storms in this time period. I have post the links to all 3 local stations below, but as of now they have not updated to reflect the latest forecast.
If you can stay at home please do so, the roads are treacherous. The official Rochester snowfall as of 5:00 p.m. is 9.1 inches at the airport, 8 to 20 inches across the area. Plus sleet, and freezing rain which makes for slippery road conditions. Winds gusts of 30 to 40 mph.with whiteouts add to the problem. Dozensof accidents have been reported, including 2 teens from Henrietta that died in a weather-related car crash.
The weather caused several cancellations at Rochester airport. We have had scattered power outages. Many local events have been canceled due to the weather. And the storm is not over. We are in the beginning of the next phase, or some say the next storm.
Rochester, and surrounding areas have been hit by all kinds of precipitation- hail, freezing rain, sleet, snow, even thunder, and lightning in the gates area. It just depends what area you live in. We either got hail, or freezing rain here. I could hear it pounding rapidly against the window. There are many weather alerts out, and they are changing all the time. It's best to click the links above for the latest. The worst of the storm is this evening into Sunday morning. According to WROC ch. 8 on T.V. we should get 5 to 8 inches MORE of snow in the Rochester area, 8 to10 inches more near the lake. The storm should taper off tomorrow, but it will be colder. Due to the wind there will be white outs making driving tricky tomorrow. Use extra caution.
When it's all over snow fall totals are expected to be 12-18" in the Rochester area. 18-24 N.W. near the lake, and 8-12 towards the finger lakes. That's according to WHEC news 10. Wow!
SUNDAY UPDATE: 15.7 inches is the official storm snowfall total at the Rochester airport. (Wolcott 15", Hamlin 21", Gaines 24"). Yes, it's over for now, but they say that another storm is coming Friday. UG!
STORM AFTEREFFECTS: ~16,000 in central and eastern N.Y. still without power. "Power has been restored to some areas. The situation is still bad." "Warming centers" are open.
Personal note- I've been very fortunate this winter. I have only had one power outage, and that lasted only a few hours. You might wonder why I'm so interested in storms. On March 3-4, 1999, Rochester had a blizzard. We had 24.3" of snow within 24 hours. It was the second greatest snowfall here within 24-hour period. The blizzard was not forecast. I went to work, and was snowed in at work for 36 hours. The facility was good to us, but I much rather have been home. It was no picnic.
Dave Price from the CBS Early Show broadcasted the weather live from downtown Rochester this morning. He also talked live with News 8 Now at Sunrise. If you missed it, you can see the video. He summerised our situation by saying that we got "6 inches of snow, and expect 6 inches more". The rest of todays forecast- windy, gusts up to 30 mph, high18. Anchor Harry Smith kept saying, "Ra cha cha". It was Surreal seeing my city on a national program.
The snow fall as of noon today is 9 inches at the airport. The storm is expected to continue until tonight, bringing another few inches of snow. About a foot of snow in all. The worst is over.
I talked with a woman who lives in Bushnell's Basin. She said that every time there is a storm her power has gone out, four times so far. And that was before this latest storm. It has been a difficult winter.
Well, it's time for me to get my shovel, and dig out my car like Mr.Dararaksmey in the photo. Hot cocoa will be my reward when I come in. ;o)

I asked some people yesterday if they had heard the latest on the coming snow storm. I don't have cable t.v., so thought that others would be more up so date on the weather. The reply was alway the same, "What snow storm?

Rochester has been hit with so many midweek storms of the mixed precipitation type, that I think we have stopped listening. Most storms have been mild to moderate. This one is different, it's a "major snow storm", and will be long in duration. It will be mostly snow, and lots of it! 10 to 16 inches of snow near Rochester city, within 36 hours. Localized tallies of 16" to 20" in parts of Wayne, Northern Monroe, and Northern Orleans near the lake, within 36 hours. (Mostly mixed participation south of Rochester.) It will start around daybreak tomorrow, and go into Wednesday night. Although predominately snow, we may have a little sleet too. It will also become cold. We had another storm starting Tuesday into today. It was another mixed precipitation storm that left a coating of slippery ice over everything, with snow on top. We had about 4 to 8 inches of snow in the area. We still had ice patches over everything streets, side walks, and lawns from the last storm. Now we have more of it. During the last storm, it took me an half hour to dig my car out of the ice, and it broke my ice scraper. We have had more of our share of these crazy mixed precipitation storms. I heard on the television that another storm of the same type will arrive Sunday night into Monday. It might be a big one. OK, I'm officially sick of Winter. UNCLE! Enough is enough!
Good golly miss molly! Rochester had another storm Friday. It wasn't as bad as the one on Wednesday. We had mixed precipitation, snow, rain, freezing rain, and sleet. It was just below freezing so it became a mixture of ice, and slush on the roads. Treacherous driving. Some power outages, but not so bad. Mostly the roads were affected. It still looks icy out now, so I am staying put unless called into work.
Troopers reported more than 200 accidents along the New York State Thruway . concentrated along the stretch between Syracuse and Kingston. Unfortunately 4 deaths occurred.
The County of Oswego NY is getting pounded with heavy snow. 1 to 4 feet of snow is expected to fall before it's over. Police in Fulton have declared a snow emergency, towing cars, and offering shelter to stranded motorists. Snow emergency has recently been lifted.
* Fulton has received 18" of snow since midnight, with more on the way. * Fair Haven in Cayuga County received 26" of snow. * Hannibal 14" of snow. * Martville in Cayuga County reported 12 " of snow.

It's not over. The National Weather Service says that several bans of heavy snow are yet to come. The heaviest could hit Tug Hill region in northern Oswego County, leaving up to three feet of new snow by sunrise Monday.
The National Weather Service snow forecast for Oswego, NY is as follows...
Sunday night- Snow showers could be heavy at times. Low around 10. Wind between 13 to 20 mph. Total snow accumulation of 11" to 17" possible.
Monday- High near 22. Breezy, winds 16-23 mph. New snow accumulation 1 to 3 inches.
Note- Oswego and Cayuga Counties are near Syracuse,about 75 miles east of Rochester. I hope that you stay home, and stay safe!
