Rochester NY 1st Real Snow Storm

Rochester NY is going to have it's 1st significant snow storm of the season. "A winter storm warning is effect from 8 AM this morning to 10 PM EST this evening." "Snow will develop later this morning. The snow will become steady late this morning through the afternoon when it could be heavy at times. The heavy snow be accompanied by some thunder. Accumulation 6 to 10 inches. Windy with temperatures steady in the mid to upper 20s. Northeast winds 10 to 20 mph becoming east and increasing to 25 to 35 mph." This storm is considered a moderate one for the area.

The Rochester city school district is closed, which is a big deal here. Many other schools are closed as well. See link below for the latest information.

The good news for Rochester is that it will be all snow and no ice. I hate those mixed precipitation storms that are so hard to clean up. Rochester can handle this, but today will be messy and a good day to stay home. I'm going out soon to do some shopping before the storm hits. I will put one of my snow shovels in my car, and leave it there all season. Then I will stay home safe & sound. It's a good day to make out Christmas cards to send to the relatives. ;o) The next storm is Sunday. It won't be as bad as this one. Click on the link below for the latest weather information.

This post was based on info from rochesterhomepage.net

UPDATE: Generally the Rochester area received 8" to 12" of snow. The official snowfall at the airport was 8.4". The next day many schools remained closed. Digging out was difficult due to the amount of heavy snow, and the cold. The road salt didn't have much effect because of the cold. 2 smaller storms would follow yielding 1'-4" each. As of 12-24-08 snowfall for the season was 43.8" normal average is 23.7. Buffalo had 42.9". Syracuse had the most with 64.3". Click here for snowfall stats.

Here's the thing about storms, I LOVE them if I am home and can watch out my window with a warm mug of coffee!
Being out working in them stinks. BLectppth !!
I remember one year in the 70's, we got 3 feet of snow and drifts that were were as tall as a two story house. We had to shovel for hours just to open the door.
My strongest memory from that day was our dog thinking it could jump out on the snow pack ... it sund down in and we had to shovel out the dog!
Crazy crazy Minnesota I tell you.

Hopefully you will be able to "watch" the storm from inside.
Here is a big mug of hot chocolate ....

We started with snow last night, then freezing rain came in. Couldn't even get our car doors open all day today! And we've had thunder and lightning along with sleet/freezing rain/snow showers on and off all day.

Is this the end of times or WHAT? lol

Its just raining over here. Id rather have SNOW, but at least I don't have to shovel!

Hi Speedcat Hollydale,

That poor doggie! LOL! I'm glad that you rescued him/her.

Yes, I'm inside warm and dry. Hey, thanks for the hot chocolate! I actually did buy some today, and had one mug already.

If I need shoveling out I'll know who to call. ;o)

Hi Giggle Pixie,

Ewww! It sounds like a mess. I hate the mixed precipitation. We are lucky, it's all snow.

"Is this the end of times?" lol No, that's about 2050. ;o)

I ALMOST didn't get the snowblower running this year, which would have cut me off from the outer world until April. It's an ancient machine....the blades stick out beyond the cowl, a feature discontinued many many years ago, which means you can take a chunk out of the house if you're not careful. I always put off starting it up to check in favorable season.... a self-destructive vice....and nearly paid the price this year.

Hi tom sheepandgoats,

Ek! That's not good. Sounds like you should save your pennies for a new snowblower. You might want to check Criegslist or Freecycle.

Hi twofinches,

I don't have cable TV so not sure what's going on. lol! I heard that it might start snowing again this afternoon.

I was going to get my hair cut, but can't. My apartment complex has not plowed since yesterday! A Time Warner truck got stuck for several minutes on our side street. I'm not taking the chance. I'm staying put. Can you believe it?

Have fun with your kids, and have a very Merry Christmas!

We have already had two snow days- today it was minus 46 with the windchill. I really need to buy a snow blower with our income tax $$$

Glad to see you back.

I like the victory canner pic- so cool although I hate homemade canned foods except jelly.

Awake In Rochester said...

Hi Michelle Gartner,

Windchill of minus 46? Now that just crazy! You keep warm now! I've asked one of my blog buddies to be a guest blogger. She lives in Seattle, and I keep hearing about it on national news.

It's not the season for canning or the Victory Canner picture, but I saw it and liked it. I remember my grandmother use to can. She had me go into the basement and get a can of this, or that for her. She lived through the depression and I guess it was almost a necessity back then.

I just want ONE good snow storm yanno? Makes me feel more holiday-ish!

Hi meleah rebeccah,

ONE is fine, but one every other day is ridiculous!

I spent a year in Syracuse. I believe they won the "Golden Snowplow" award every year. Well-deserved. I grew up in New England, and even I was chilled by the cold and totally wowed by the snow removal.

I'm in Philly now, which means I panic and run for essentials when a dusting is in the forecast.

Hi A.,

"Panic when there is a dusting." LOL! You should visit Syracuse again! ;o) Yes, we get a lot of snow around here. I love the warm spell now, and being able to see the grass for a few days.

When in Rome, and all.

I believe it snowed in MAY in Syracuse. If nothing else, it gave me something to brag about and/or elicit sympathy!

Hi A.,

When in Rome? I wish I was in Rome. LOL! We just had another 6"(?) of snow in the last 12 hours. Well, at least we had several days of nice weather above freezing before that. But Rome still sounds better to me. ;o)
