Barack Obama's grandmother has died

On the eve of the election Sen. Obama has lost the woman who helped raise him. His grandmother, "Madelyn Dunham, has died peacefully after a battle with cancer." Obama recently interrupted his election race to say goodbye to her in Hawaii. "Dunham helped raise Obama from the age of 10." Click here for more about Ms. Dunham's life.

My thoughts & prayers are with the Senior, and his family. Obviously this is a bitter/sweet time in the Senator's life. If your so inclined you can send a card, or an email to Obama here.

The photo is of Sen. Obama's grandparents, Stanley and Madelyn Dunham, on a park bench in New York City while he was a student at Columbia University.

Very sad news. I have seen all of my Grandparents leave this world, and know the pain.
As I miss them, I also know I will be one day reunited.

Hi Speedcat Hollydale,

He must be on one heck of an emotional roller-coaster.

This was so incredibly sad! She had poured her life into making him a successful man and just when he was on the edge of the biggest jump of his life, she could not hang on to see the crowning glory. I understand the emotional turmoil this must have caused to Obama and his family. The day my husband and I discovered that we were expecting our first child, before we had a chance to break the news, the phone rang and we were told that my husbands brother had just been diagnosed with advanced bone cancer. As my body nurtured a growing life my brother in law began to lose his fight. The day before I gave birth the cancer won he died.My husband witnessed the birth of his sons (turned out there were two in there!) and then within two hours had to fly to be with his family and attend a funeral. Life is such a strange dance sometimes.

Hi twofinches,

I'm so sorry that you, and your family had to go through that. Life is very odd.
